Pantanal

The main city of Mato Grosso do Sul is Campo Grande. Mato Grosso do Sul occupies an area of 357,140 km² but is home to only about 2.4 million inhabitants. It is one of the least densely populated areas in Brazil with only 6.9 inhabitants/km² (2010). One of the reasons for this is the fact that over one third of the state is marshy floodland called Pantanal.

The major rivers are: Río Paraguay, Rio Paraná, Rio Paranaíba, Rio Miranda, Rio Aquidauana, Rio Taquari, Rio Negro, Rio Apa and Rio Correntes. The Pantanal wetlands are in between these rivers.

Economy and Agriculture

Mato Grosso do Sul mainly lives off agriculture and cattle farming. The main crops are sugar cane, wheat, soya, mandioca (cassava), rice and cotton.

1. DAY: Arriving in Miranda

Arrive in Miranda, check-in at the Pousada Ranch Mandovi. Walk to observe different monkeys and birds, such as: blue macaws, toucans, parrots, Ibises, etc. You may also take a small tour of the city. Later, a typical dinner Pantaneiro will be served.

Day 2: Boat trip on the River Miranda and Vermelho

In the morning you will drive with stops for photos to the Estrada Parque / Park way. After lunch you will make a beautiful boat trip on the River Miranda and Vermelho. You will have the chance to see caimans upclose, howler monkeys climbing in trees, capivaras on the shore and between July and October, even a Jaguar relaxing close to the river! Sleeping in Dbl or Tpl room with, a private bath room and fullbord.

Day 3: Jeep safari with a walk on the Estrada Parque

Early in the morning, you will start the Jeep safari with a lot of photo opportunities, walk into the beautiful dense native forest with a lot of Accuri Palm trees. On the way you will eat a typical Pantaneiro lunch. In the late afternoon, you will drive back to Miranda with a lot of great impressions and unforgettable memories.

Then you will explore diferent regions of the Pantanal, landscapes rich with flora and fauna: you will go around the Pantanal Rio Vermelho, Pantanal Rio Abobral, Pantanal Nhecolandia

Accompany the Peoes (Cowboys) in their work. Experience how they separate, vaccinate and mark their cattle. Between June / July and October / November you can accompany the cattle drive (from 20 to over 1,000 cows)! It is up to you, if you want to work with the Peoes for half a day or for more than 3 days. Over the 3 days, we will make sure you do excursions on foot and horse back, by jeep and boat to experience the rich flora & fauna.

Day1:

We welcome you at the airport in Campo Grande and transfer you to the Fazenda near Miranda (2.5 hours drive). There you will eat a rich traditional lunch. In the afternoon, we can visit the Peoes and observe some aspects of their daily life or we can take a walk around a little lake to explore the rich variety of its nature. In the evening, you will be served a delicious dinner.

DAY 2:

Milk the cows before breakfast and after you can accompany the Peoes in their daily work. On the way, you will see anteaters, capibaras, blue macaws, toucans and a lot more birds. After lunch, you can work with the Peoes or explore another part of the Fazenda. After dinner we will do a jeep safari and hopefully we will see some tapirs, anteaters, foxes, amardillos and the shiny red eyes of the caimans.

DAY 3:

After breakfast, according to your itinerary you can go to Bonito, Corumba, or to another Fazenda or back to Campo Grande.

Over the last few years we have had several guests who have taken up birdwatching. This package is perfect to observe birds in different habitats with Marcello who will give you detailed information about the birds you are seeing and help you to catalogue them.

Day1:

Arriving in Miranda, check in at the simple but charming Pantanal Ranch Mandovi. In the afternoon, go for the first walk to a dry part of the Pantanal. Dinner and sleep overnight at the Pantanal Ranch Mandovi.

DAY 2:

Sunrise walk before breakfast. Breakfast around 09:00, making a bird list. Lunch. Siesta. After a boat tour on the river Miranda and Salobra which has a rich bird diversity. Dinner and sleep overnight at the Pantanal Ranch Mandovi.

DAY 3:

Day trip to the Fazenda Pantaneira, where you have the possibility to get in touch with a typical Fazenda Pantaneira whose habitat attracts birds generally found in the Serra Bodoquena. Lunch. Siesta. Going by Jeep and foot for another birdwatching tour. Dinner and sleep overnight at the Pantanal Ranch Mandovi.

DAY 4:

After breakfast, a 1.5 hour drive to Passo da Lontra, in Pantanal Wetlands, with photo stops along the way, check in at the Hotel. Lunch. Boat trip in the afternoon on the Rivers Miranda and Vermelho – this is a region rich in flora & fauna, enjoy the sunset. Dinner and sleep overnight at the Hotel Lontra.

DAY 5:

After breakfast, a Jeepsafari on the Estrada Parque with walk. Lunch. Transfer back to Miranda. Dinner and sleep overnight in the Pantanal Ranch Mandovi.

DAY 6:

After breakfast, individuals depart.

DAY 1: Pantanal Ranch Mandovi

Checkin at the Pantanal Ranch Mandovi, in the afternoon, a barefoot walk around a small lake with Marcello Yndio or Mirjam to enter in contact with nature. Learn how to do Tree Meditation.

DAY 2: Pantanal Ranch Mandovi

Depending on the weather, before or after breakfast give Thanks to Mother Earth. Then a walk to learn how to read tracks and to learn how to use our five senses – Smell, Hear, Taste, Feel, See. Lunch, siesta. Learn how to recognize the power of plants and animals that are here to help us when we are open our senses and our heart.

DAY 3: Camping in the Pantanal

Giving Thanks to Mother Earth. Breakfast. A 1.5 hour drive to the River Miranda. Change onto a motorboat or a jeep, depends on the season, setting up camp – looking for firewood, setting up tents or hammocks. Walks with Marcello Yndio to intensify what you have learnt and how to orientate yourself. Prepare dinner, fire. Sleep overnight in tents or hammocks.

DAY 4: Camping in the Pantanal

Walk in harmony with nature, boat trip, swimming, and enjoying the Pantanal. To be happy and grateful about the intense variety of nature. Cooking your meals, fire. Sleep overnight in tents or hammocks.

DAY 5: Pantanal – Pantanal Ranch Mandovi

This time, the group will lead Marcello Yndio and will show him the miracles of nature. Lunch, packing and leaving the camp site how you met it when you first arrived there. Saying Thanks, driving back to Miranda to the Pantanal Ranch Mandovi. Dinner, evaluation of the tour.

DAY 6: Departing day

After breakfast, individuals departing.

Explore the original Pantanal Rio Negro, in the heart of the Pantanal with the richest flora and fauna by jeep, horse, foot, boat and plane! You will stay in two different Fazendas. You will travel by jeep between the Lodge Barra Mansa and the Fazenda Baia das Pedras. On the last day, you have the possiblity return by plane to Campo Grande and fly over the biggest swampland on earth!

Our guide who will welcome you at the international airport in Campo Grande. You will then cross the Pantanal from Aquidauana to the Rio Negro by jeep to the Fazenda Barra Mansa. You will stay there for 4 days / 3 nights, and another 3 days / 2 nights at Fazenda Baia das Pedras. You will receive delicious full bord meals, conduct activities such as walks, horse riding, Piranha fishing, a night jeep safari, experience local cuisine and culture from the Pantanal, participate in the life of the locals, be explained of the use of the Fauna and Flora as medicinal plants and be accompanied by a multilingual guide. DAY 1: Campo Grande-Barra Mansa:

Our guide will welcome you at the international airport in Campo Grande, you will do the crossing of the Pantanal Aquidauana and Rio Negro by Jeep to the Fazenda Barra Mansa. Checkin, depends the arriving time: lunch and after the first activity or dinner

DAY 2: Barra Mansa:

After breakfast you are doing a walk through the Capoes (little hills with trees), Corixa (swampland) and Cordilherias ( higher woods, that never get flooded). This landscape is a rich variety of plants and animals. You can be sure to see blue macaws, jaburi storks, parakeets and with some luck a tapir and giant otters. In the afternoon you are doing a boat or canoe trip on the river negro.

DAY 3: Barra Mansa:

You enjoy an other day in the beautiful Barra Mansa

DAY 4: Jeep Safari

After breakfast you are leaving by Jeep to the Fazenda Baia das Pedras. Vazantes fields, lagoons (baias), salinas (salt water lakes), forest and savannhas are some of the tour sceneries, you will get in touch with plants and animals. The time of the Jeepsafari is depending of the weather conditions and how many fotostopps you are doing. Arriving at noon or in the afternoon, the programm afterwards is depending on your wishes. For example: fish for piranha and afterwards you can enjoy the beautiful sunset. When the Piranha fishing has been succesfull a delicious piranha dinner will be served.

DAY 5:

Choose if you prefer to do horsebackriding or a walk in the dense forest, doing a boat trip or birdwatching near the Fazenda. Doing night safari, depending on weather conditions and your preference, going by jeep, by foot or by boat.

DAY 6: Departing day

Departing time is depending your schedule.!

In those six days you will make a lot of photo stops to see: Capybaras, deer’s, peccaries, foxes, agutis, monkeys, anteaters, armadillos, nandus, lizards, caimans, snakes, toucans, different kingfisher, macaws, hawks, jabiru storks…….and with some luck tapirs, giant otters or even a jaguar.Important: Because we are far away from any busy tourist routes and because the landscape and surface conditions change very quickly with incliment weather, we will need to adapt our routes to these conditions. Over the last few years, we have had various guests interested in photography and who would like to spend more time in nature to take many amazing pictures. Sometimes, they would buy a new camera or take photography lessons before their trip just to perfect their skills. However, we have created this tour for people who love photography and would like to share their knowledge, tips and tricks with others whilst touring the Pantanal.

DAY 1:

DAY 3:

Day trip to the Fazenda Pantaneira, here you will have the possibility to see a typical Fazenda Pantaneira and its habitants as well as take beautiful photos. After lunch, looking at the pictures taken and learning from the group. Another activity in the afternoon, dinner and sleep overnight at the Pantanal Ranch Mandovi.

DAY 4:

After breakfast, a 1.5 hour drive to Passo da Lontra with photo stops along the way, check in at the Hotel. Lunch. In the afternoon, a boat trip on the River Miranda and Vermelho. This region has very rich flora & fauna, enjoy the great sunset. Dinner and sleep overnight at the Hotel Lontra.

DAY 5:

After breakfast, Jeepsafari on the Estrada Parque with a walk, lunch, transfer back to Miranda, Dinner and sleep overnight at the Pantanal Ranch Mandovi.

DAY 6:

After breakfast, individuals depart.

Description of the ship:

We are working with different ship:
One has four rooms with one or two bunk beds, ac, ventilator, 2 bathrooms with hot shower and a lounge. On the deck you can enjoy and observe the beauty of the Pantanal. The other has one bed room with eight beds, ac, ventilator, 2 bathrooms with hot shower and a lounge. On the deck you can enjoy and observe the beauty of the Pantanal

Description of the tour and the seasons:

The tour will be adapted to the seasons. During the dry season from July to October the rivers are low, and the animals can be observed near the remaining waterpounds. During the subsequent rainy period from November to January the Pantanal is once transformed into an extensive marshland. A season of little rain follows this from February to June when water levels often continue to rise in the first half. When this happens, the animals withdraw to the higher woods-the “cordilheiras”. Then it is the cordilheiras that offer perfect opportunities to watch the wildlife. By spezial wishes from the end of june-October its possible to do Jaguartracking.

DAY 1: Starting the tour: Driving to the ship – Start with the tour

Transfer from Miranda to the ship, 2 hours for km 113. Lunch on the boat, driving up the river Miranda to the hill. Marcello will show you animals like caimans, jabiru storks, howler monkeys, capibaras etc on the way. When you wish you for a walk or fish your first Piranha for dinner.

DAY 2: Rio Miranda & Vermelho

In the morning you climb on the hill to have a great view over the Pantanal. After the ship drives to the river Vermelho. In the afternoon ist possible to take a bath or catching Piranhas. The dinner will be a typical barbecue Pantaneiro. Going at night with the motorboat or rowing boat to observe the nocturnal animals. With some luck you can even see a jaguar..

DAY 3: Rio Vermelho

Exploring by foot and boat the great landscape ot the river Vermelho with his rich flora & fauna..

DAY 4: Rio Vermelho – Estrada Parque – Miranda

After breakfast you will drive back by the ship, observing the wildlive on the way. And doing by Jeep a Safari on the Estrada Parque to explore an other part of the Pantanal, a old native palmtree forest whith a rich wildlife, including lunch.Transfer to Buraco das Piranhas or Miranda. Every day drives a bus to Bonito except Sunday. To Campo Grande or Corumba exists various options

• Weather: Note that the weather may change abruptly – in the heart of the Pantanal, sudden drops in temperature from 40°C to 0°C have been recorded. Because the landscape and surface conditions change very quickly with inclement weather, we will need to adapt our routes to these conditions.
• The water level rises by about 3 m during the rainy season, so again we may need to take alternative routes to accommodate this.

The seasons in the Pantanal:
The climate is variable from 0°C in the winter time to 45°C in the summer time.

• Dry season: From July until September in the Pantanal region of Miranda, Rio Negro and Nhecolandia.
• Rain season: From November until March in the Pantanal region of Miranda and Rio Negro
• Rain season: From May until July in the Pantanal region of Paraguay, Estrada Park and Nhecolandia.
• Summer: From October until March, applies to entire Pantanal region.
• Winter: From July until August, applies to entire Pantanal region.
