Ecotourism in the Amazon is one of the most authentic and enriching experiences in the world, and the Amazon Turtle Lodge is one of the top destinations for those who want to connect with nature in a sustainable and responsible way. Located approximately 3 and a half hours from Manaus, this lodge offers visitors a complete immersion in the Amazon rainforest, with comfort, ecological activities and a structure that respects the environment.
In this article, we will present everything you need to know about the Amazon Turtle Lodge, including its history, accommodations, birdwatching activities, social responsibility, complete structure, ecotourism packages in the Amazon and useful information to plan your trip.
History of Amazon Turtle Lodge: A Love Project for the Forest
The Amazon Turtle Lodge is more than just a lodge: it is a project rooted in the essence of ecotourism in the Amazon, conceived by Max Maia, a true son of the forest. Max spent his entire childhood in the region, growing up surrounded by the beauty of the Amazon, listening to the birdsong, learning from an early age about the importance of community life and practicing activities typical of riverside peoples: hunting, fishing, planting and harvesting.
Continuous observation of his family’s practices and customs inspired Max to design the sustainable projects and activities that today make up the ecotourism packages in the Amazon offered by the lodge. Integrating the knowledge of local communities into the structure of the Amazon Turtle Lodge and training them to work professionally in tourism was a rewarding process, which revealed talents and further enhanced the quality of the services provided.
Currently, the lodge’s staff is made up mostly of people from neighboring communities, working as receptionists, cooks, waiters and chambermaids, all of whom are formally hired and live in nearby communities. This management model values the local economy and reinforces the commitment to sustainable tourism in the Amazon.
Visitors are enchanted not only by the stunning landscapes, but also by the simplicity, authenticity and hospitality with which they are welcomed. All activities are led by specialized guides, but the big difference lies in the “mateiros”, jungle guides from the surrounding communities, who accompany each tour, sharing traditional knowledge and ensuring that the experience is genuine and memorable.
Accommodation: comfort and integration with nature
At Amazon Turtle Lodge, every detail of our structure has been carefully designed to provide comfort, authenticity and complete immersion in the lush nature of the Amazon. The first chalets were inspired by the homes of local communities, using wood and highlighting the varnished flooring that evokes the vibrant colors of the region’s typical homes. All have private balconies, privileged views of the forest or the lake, as well as large windows with mosquito screens. The lodge, as a whole, is a tribute to Amazonian architecture, combining natural beauty with comfort in the middle of the forest.
Woody Bungalow (Comfort)
These were the first chalets built at the lodge, designed in the traditional style of Amazonian caboclo houses. They are spacious wooden structures with a large window that lets in natural light and offers incredible views of the lake. The private balcony has a table and two chairs, ideal for relaxing while enjoying the sunset or watching the sunrise, when several species of birds rest in the nearby trees.
During the flood season, the waters come close to the bungalows, providing an experience even closer to nature.
Amenities:
- 1 double bed + 1 single bed
- Air conditioning
- Private balcony with lake view
- Large window with mosquito screen
- Private bathroom

Masonry Bungalow (Comfort)
The masonry chalets were created to offer even more comfort to guests, especially for families with small children who prefer safer accommodations, away from the lake area, but without giving up a cozy balcony with a view of the forest. These units are perfect for those who value the comfort of air conditioning, even in the middle of the jungle.
Amenities:
- 1 double bed + 1 single bed
- Private balcony with forest views

Superior Bungalow
Launched in 2017, the superior bungalows were designed for guests who want an even more sophisticated experience without losing touch with nature. They are spacious accommodations with modern facilities and the same amenities found in urban hotels, such as a queen-size bed, minibar and hot shower. Located in a more private area of the lodge, they guarantee privacy and tranquility.
Two of the superior bungalows are twinned and are further away from the other accommodations, perfect for couples looking for special moments or families wanting a private dinner in the middle of the forest.

Fotografia de aves: um paraíso para birdwatchers
The Amazon rainforest is a true paradise for birdwatchers and photographers, home to hundreds of rare, endemic and vibrantly colored species that delight all who venture into its vast expanse of green. Here, bird photography goes far beyond visual capture: it is a complete sensory experience, marked by the captivating sound of birdsong, the light filtering through the treetops and the excitement of each new sighting.
At Amazon Turtle Lodge, we offer a complete structure and itineraries designed especially for those who wish to explore and capture the region’s ornithological diversity with their lenses. Our specialized birdwatching guides, who are deeply knowledgeable about the habits of Amazonian birds, accompany each field trip, ensuring that you are in the right places at the right times to maximize your chances of photographing the most emblematic species.
During the expeditions, we walk along ecological trails and remote areas of the forest, always attentive to the surrounding environment, and we sail silently through streams and igapós in motorized canoes, providing respectful and safe access to the birds in their natural habitat.
Among the photographic highlights of this region are iconic species such as the Cock-of-the-Rock (Rupicola rupicola), with its vibrant orange plumage, the Uirapuru (Cyphorhinus arada), known for its mesmerizing song, the colorful parrots and macaws, as well as an astonishing variety of hummingbirds, kingfishers, herons and jacamins. In addition, there is always the possibility of catching birds of prey, such as hawks and falcons, in full flight, composing impressive images with the dramatic landscapes of the jungle.
The natural light in the forest changes constantly, creating unique photographic opportunities at dawn, when the sky is tinged with golden hues, and at dusk, when the atmosphere turns softly blue. At night, boat trips also offer the chance to capture nocturnal animals under the starry sky and magical reflections of the calm waters of the rivers.
To ensure a full bird photography experience, we recommend that you bring your equipment well protected — waterproof bags are essential — and, of course, binoculars and long-range lenses to capture incredible details, even at greater distances. Our guides will always be on hand to suggest angles, identify species and indicate the best observation points depending on the weather conditions and the cycles of the forest.
Birdwatching and photography are not only contemplative activities, but also moments of deep connection with nature, respect for the environment and appreciation of the rich biodiversity of the Amazon. Here, each click is more than an image: it is a testament to the beauty and complexity of the largest tropical forest on the planet.
Social responsibility: tourism with a purpose
We have a social project with the local community, where 80% of our workforce is made up of local residents, generating jobs, income and a better quality of life for many families. In addition, in partnership with CETAM, the Port Authority and ULBRA, we have held several training courses and educational lectures on environmental preservation for the residents of these communities. Over the years, we have closely monitored this development, always seeking to preserve the forest as much as possible, as we understand that it is much more than our source of income.
The Amazon Turtle Lodge supports and assists the “Pé-de-Pincha” project, an initiative to conserve turtles, such as the Amazon turtle, tracajá and iaçá. This project works with traditional communities, promoting environmental awareness in the Amazon region, in addition to developing the qualifications of volunteer environmental agents, students from the Federal University of Amazonas and education professionals. The project monitors and encourages the life cycle of turtles, from the nest to the release of the young into the wild, ensuring the conservation and survival of these species.
Structure: everything you need for a complete experience
We offer three types of bungalows for those who want to experience the Amazonian nature in comfort. The rustic bungalows have fans and views of the lake, while the masonry bungalows have air conditioning and views of the forest. For an even more special experience, our superior bungalows, including a luxury bungalow, are spacious and equipped with a king-size bed, air conditioning, hot water and sockets, ensuring maximum comfort amidst nature.
Our lodge is located on Lake Tracajá, in the southeast region of Manaus, within a preserved area of primary forest, rich in biodiversity. The journey to the lodge is already part of the adventure: after navigating the famous meeting of the Negro and Solimões rivers, the land route along the BR-319 highway takes you to km 14, from where a boat takes you on the Mamorí River to the lodge.
The region offers numerous ecotourism options, such as birdwatching, trails and river tours. Between March and August, during the rainy season, the igapós are flooded, providing incredible trips in motorized canoes to admire the Amazonian fauna and flora. In the dry season, from September to February, the river levels drop, allowing hikes along the land trails and along the igarapés, offering a unique and immersive experience in the Amazon rainforest.
