Ayahuasca retreat in Manaus

Ayahuasca is a psychoactive beverage traditionally used in indigenous rituals in the Amazon, with a history of use dating back thousands of years. The name “Ayahuasca” derives from Quechua, one of the native languages of the region, meaning “vine of the soul” or “vine of the dead”, which already suggests the spiritual depth associated with this ritual. The beverage is prepared from two main plants: the Banisteriopsis caapi vine, which contains substances that allow for psychoactive action, and the leaves of Psychotria viridis, which contain DMT (dimethyltryptamine), a potent hallucinogenic compound.

Historically, the first people to use Ayahuasca were the indigenous people of the Amazon, who incorporated the drink into their religious and spiritual rituals. For these people, the use of Ayahuasca is a sacred practice, seen as a way of communicating with spirits, ancestors and nature. Ceremonies are usually led by shamans or spiritual leaders, who guide participants on their inner journeys, providing them with visions that can have profound and transformative meaning.

During rituals, Ayahuasca is consumed collectively and ceremonially, and the experience of the drink can vary considerably from person to person. Many reports include vivid visions, altered states of consciousness, intense spiritual experiences, a sense of connection with the cosmos or with nature itself, and a profound sense of self-knowledge and healing. Participants often report a sense of ego dissolution and deep introspection that can reveal traumas or emotional patterns, allowing them to work on the process of emotional and spiritual healing.

People who participate in Ayahuasca rituals often speak of feelings of purification and renewal. In addition to the visions, many experience nausea or vomiting, which are considered to be both physical and energetic cleansing processes. The emotions that arise during Ayahuasca use can be very intense, ranging from moments of great euphoria, deep meditation, and even emotional discomfort, but usually culminating in a state of peace and mental clarity after the ritual is completed.

The practice of Ayahuasca use is not limited to indigenous culture. Over the past few decades, the use of Ayahuasca has expanded to other parts of the world, especially within spiritual seekers and healers, who recognize the brew’s potential to promote experiences of self-discovery and personal growth. However, Ayahuasca rituals continue to be, for many, a deeply spiritual experience and a connection to the traditions and wisdom of the indigenous peoples of the Amazon.
